maps and i

maps tend to incite strong feelings in me. i was looking for one for a paper i'm working on, and came accross this one in a UNDP report.

or those of you seeing this for the first time, it's the indonesian new guinea (papua). i now have it tacked to my bedroom door, underneath the map of germany (which has had to be re-tacked onto 4 different bedroom doors over the last 10+ years). i glance at western nueva guinea (yep, named after the african guinea due to similarities in inhabitants' physical features) now and again today. wish i could get a bigger n better version of it, w/ topography, major cities, and roads. a few months ago i was reading a travel book that began as a map tacked to the ceiling, outlining all the world's ancient trade routes.

i know what i'll be dreaming of tonight.
